3M™ Attest™ Biological Indicator
Biological indicators (BI)
provide the best assurance
of sterility by challenging the ster-
ilizer with quantifiable, highly
resistant spores. Biological indica-
tors are used for load control
monitoring which is the process
by which a load is monitored and
released based on the result of a
biological indicator in a test pack.
The self-contained BI for 121°C (250°F) gravity air dis-
placement steam cycles consist of a Bacillus stearother-
mophilus spore strip; sealed glass ampule with growth
medium and a bromocresol purple pH indicator system;
brown color-coded cap with holes for sterilant penetra-
tion and a hydrophobic filter as a bacterial barrier, and
a chemical indicator on the label that changes from
rose to brown when processed. After sterilization, the
vial is "crushed" to add the growth media to the pro-
cessed spore strip. The BI is incubated for 48 hours for
a visual change readout. A color change to yellow indi-
cates surviving spores and a positive result.
RAVEN Culture Test
Test efficiency of steam, dry heat, or
gas sterilization procedures with one
convenient spore strip. Available as
spore strips without media tubes or as
a complete test kit. Kit and spore
strips contain Bacillus stearother-
mophilus and Bacillus subtilis var.
niger spores. After sterilization, the
strips are removed from their glassine
envelopes and placed in the sterile
tubes containing 5 mL of modified soybean casein broth
media. The media turns from red to yellow if growth
occurs, indicating a positive result.
Harvey B/T Sure Biological Indicators
Easily monitor the effectiveness of your steam sterilizer
by verifying the sterility of your instruments, vials,
media, liquid cycles and other products in less time
than it takes to send samples to an outside lab. Run a
B/T Sure Biological Indicator through a standard steril-
ization cycle, compress the plastic vial to break the
glass ampule, then incubate for 48 hours. Obvious color
change from purple to yellow indicates an ineffective
sterilation process. Data meets FDA criteria after 48
hours incubation.
