Beautiful and majestic, the North American Mountain Lion has an exclusive home inside the WildWood Zoo here in our Marshfield, Wisconsin community.
The Floyd and Pat Hamus Cougar Exhibit was built in 2019 to accommodate mountain lion siblings Star and Thunder. Born in 2008, the sibling pair moved to the central Wisconsin area from a wildlife farm in Indiana. The move was to help promote a better and longer life expectancy as mountain lion species were not prominent. Needing more room to roam, the cougar exhibit was constructed to create a more naturalistic environment for Star and Thunder to be more at "home." The environment consists of a brush and twig life zone with sandstone structures that best allow the siblings to thrive while zookeepers maintain their well-being.
Known for their captivating power and excellent jumping feats, the cougar species is no longer considered endangered in North America. Mountain Lions are beginning to expand their ranges, with Wisconsin being high on the list of potential repopulations.
