Neogen Violet Red Bile Agar (VRBA) is a selective and differential culture medium used in the food processing industry to enumerate coliforms, key indicators of hygiene in food and dairy products. Its selective agents, bile salts and crystal violet, inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and some non-enteric Gram-negative bacteria. Lactose and neutral red in the medium allow for the differentiation of lactose-fermenting coliforms, which appear as red or pink colonies with a reddish zone. Variations like VRBA with MUG facilitate the specific detection of E. coli through fluorescence, while Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (VRBGA) broadens detection to include the entire Enterobacteriaceae family.
